Relationships with Healthcare Professionals
LESLEY RUSSELL, MB.Ch.B., MRCP
Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer
The complex endeavor of developing and bringing novel treatment options to patients living with difficult-to-treat or rare conditions requires a great deal of both vision and insight. It is a process of discovery and of collaboration. And it involves not only finding the right answers, but asking the right questions.
At Cephalon, we recognize that our mission is one we cannot successfully achieve alone. We rely on healthcare professionals around the world for their expertise in the understanding of disease and patient care. They play a vital role in assuring that patients have access to the medications they need and that those medications are used correctly. Healthcare professionals need the latest, most accurate scientific information available regarding our products to assure they are used in a manner that achieves the fullest therapeutic benefit and maintains patient safety.
Cephalon fully supports transparency in our relationships with healthcare professionals , which we hope will foster a better understanding of the critical role these vital relationships play in developing and bringing new medicines to market and in addressing the needs of patients. Therefore, Cephalon has begun to make the financial nature of our relationships with healthcare professionals transparent to the public. (top of opening page screen)
Fee for Services Paid to Healthcare Professionals
This database contains a list of healthcare professionals and related entities, such as hospitals, institutions, organizations and pharmacies, with which Cephalon has contracted to participate in speaker programs or provide consulting services in 2009. The total amount of fees is for all services provided by the individual healthcare professional or entity for the 2009 calendar year. This database will be updated quarterly.
Education and Advisory Services
The healthcare professionals who participate in the clinical research that brings new medications to market are the most knowledgeable about those medicines. As such, their peers prefer to learn about new medications or new indications for those medications from those experts. That is why Cephalon contracts with select healthcare professionals to conduct speaker programs that educate their peers about the benefits, risks and appropriate uses of our products, as well as the latest scientific advances in related therapeutic areas. We select these individuals based on their high level of clinical expertise and their standing within the medical community.
Healthcare professionals also play a vital role in helping us identify and better understand unmet medical needs. We contract with them to advise us on how they are working with their patients and other healthcare professionals to manage disease and how we might develop our medications to respond to any unmet needs they have identified. With the help of these healthcare professionals, the products we offer today may help patients in unseen ways in the future.
We contract with healthcare professionals when there is a legitimate business need that they can address and are uniquely qualified to satisfy. We always pay fair market value for the services they provide.
