Environmental Stewardship

Our goal is to leave the largest impression, with the smallest footprint. To some, this might seem like a paradox. But at Cephalon, it is central to the values that drive us every day to achieve our mission: to develop therapies that help improve the health and quality of life for millions of patients. We believe we also have the responsibility to conduct our business in ways that minimize our impact on the environment.

We at Cephalon embody a commitment to environmental stewardship at every level in our organization and every corner of our business – from offices to laboratories to manufacturing sites. We believe this commitment surpasses legal requirements, regulations, and international agreements on environmental issues that are relevant to our business – though we view these as important.

We believe environmental responsibility goes hand in hand with the obligation we have to make a positive impact in the communities in which we live and operate. In that regard, we encourage each employee to make his or her contributions by adopting a “green” way of thinking in their jobs and in their lives. Many of the companywide initiatives we have implemented have been the result of suggestions made by our employees.

Sustaining a Healthy Environment

Our environmental initiatives place an emphasis on our engineering, chemical development and manufacturing operations, since these are responsible for the greatest consumption of energy and resources and generate the most waste. Cephalon facilities throughout the world have implemented programs to minimize pollutants, conserve energy and other resources, reduce the generation of solid and hazardous waste, and decrease the use of solvents. Cephalon facilities have also reduced the volume of potentially hazardous chemicals stored in inventory.

Some of the ways in which Cephalon is furthering its commitment to environmental stewardship include:

  • Eliminating tons of waste previously sent to landfills through recycling.
  • Conserving energy by implementing more efficient heating and cooling systems, as well as setting back thermostats and lighting.
  • Limiting hazardous waste at our manufacturing and R&D sites.
  • Implementing new synthetic chemistry processes for the development of bendamustine, resulting in measurable reductions in waste and hazardous chemical use.
  • Adding hybrid vehicles to our U.S. field sales fleet has reduced greenhouse emissions and earned recognition from Automotive Fleet magazine as one of the Top 50 hybrid fleets.
  • Requiring facilities staff to use environmentally friendly cleaning supplies.

Whether it’s through global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and pollution or individual choice to carpool and use two-sided printing, we at Cephalon are living our commitment to a more sustainable world.
