CEPHALON CONTRIBUTES TO THE FIGHT AGAINST MALARIA
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that each year, there are nearly 250 million cases of malaria and close to one million deaths. In Africa alone, a child dies every 45 seconds from the disease, which is caused by parasites that are spread from person to person through the bites of infected mosquitoes.
Most people who are affected by malaria live in countries where economic resources are scarce, and they often cannot afford treatment. With 2.4 billion people at risk for malaria, we cannot afford to overlook this serious health concern.
Cephalon is addressing this concern with a range of products that respond not only to the various needs of local populations from endemic countries but also travelers who visit those infected countries.
Developed through considerable investments and research and development led by Mepha—Cephalon's wholly-owned subsidiary—these products reflect a commitment to malaria treatments that has spanned over 20 years. And, the combination therapy offered by two of these medications has been recommended by the WHO in its official Malaria Treatment Guidelines.
"Cephalon is proud of Mepha's significant contributions to people around the world who are affected by malaria," said Kevin Buchi, CEO, Cephalon. "Our combination therapy demonstrates the value of applying science and technology in ways that meet medical needs as well as societal and environmental concerns."
